May 18, 2001, Newsletter Issue #37: How to choose a tattoo

Tip of the Week

A really good source for tattoos that have been applied to people, are tattoo magazines. I like to see what a tattoo looks like on a leg or back or arm. You can get an idea about color combinations, the size of a tattoo, and tons of theme ideas.

You can go to a tattoo studio, and look at the artists` books. Usually the artist puts his or her best designs in the book, so you will see if you like the artist`s style of work, at the same time.

You can also go through art books to come up with ideas. Copies of art pieces sometimes make great tattoos. I`ve seen Picasso, cave art, and many Celtic designs taken from original art pieces.

You can also talk with your tattoo artist. Tell them what you are thinking about, things you like, colors you desire, shapes, and themes, like angels, fairies, skull heads, whatever turns your crank, and in most cases, the artist will design something just for you.
